Contents
Per 5 mL syr Diphenhydramine HCl 12.5 mg, phenylpropanolamine HCl 12.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Relief of cough, clogged nose, runny nose, postnasal drip, sneezing, itchy & watery eyes associated w/ common cold, allergic rhinitis, flu & other minor resp tract infections. Helps decongest sinus openings & passages.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 10 mL every 6 hr. Childn 7-12 yr 5 mL every 6 hr, 2-6 yr 2.5 mL every 6 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Narrow-angle glaucoma, high BP, severe heart disease, history of stroke or intracranial hemorrhage, porphyria, stomach ulcer or obstruction of the gut or bladder, or kidney disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis or other lung diseases, high BP or other heart problems, history or active seizures, glaucoma, thyroid problems, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, enlarged prostate, bladder problems or difficulty urinating. Patients w/ toxic goiter, BPH, irregular heart rate, breathing problems & chronic cough as w/ asthma & COPD & those receiving antidepressants. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Diphenhydramine: Sedation, dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue, ataxia, nervousness, tremors; GI effects include epigastric distress, nausea & vomiting. Dryness of mouth & mucous secretions, palpitations, urinary tract dysfunction, severe allergic reactions eg, difficulty of breathing & swelling of the face, neck, tongue or throat. Phenylpropanolamine: Sudden persistent severe headache, nervousness, restlessness, insomnia/sleeplessness, dizziness, anxiety, confusion, high BP, palpitation, chest tightness, tremor, agitation, irritability, aggressiveness, nausea & blurred vision.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, medicines for anxiety or sleep disorder (eg, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, diazepam, temazepam, traizolam), medicines for depression (eg, amitriptyline, imipramine, moclobemide, sertraline), other cold/allergy medicines or any other medicines causing drowsiness, sleepiness & relaxation because of the possibility for increased  sedation. Hypertensive crisis w/ MAOIs (eg, phenelzine, selegiline) & not to be used w/in 2 wk after stopping MAOIs. Possibility of increased toxicity w/ sympathomimetic agents (eg, epinephrine) & general anesth (eg, halothane). Increased CV effects w/ β-blockers (eg, carvedilol, metoprolol, propranolol).
